H.H. Gopāla Kṛṣṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja
A life of pure devotion, tireless service, and surrender to Śrīla Prabhupāda's mission.
His Holiness Gopāla Kṛṣṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja appeared on this planet on the most auspicious day of Annadā Ekādasī, on August 14, 1944, in New Delhi, India. Having been named Gopāla Kṛṣṇa at the time of his appearance, his spiritual master had not changed his name at the time of Harināma initiation.
H.H. Gopāla Kṛṣṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja, after graduating from the University of Delhi, studied Business Management at the Sorbonne University of Paris on a scholarship from the French Government and later, obtained a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the McGill University at Montreal, where he met his spiritual preceptor — His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedānta Swāmī, Śrīla Prabhupāda.
Having received word that His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedānta Swāmī, Śrīla Prabhupāda, Founder-Ācārya of ISKCON, would be arriving in Montreal on June 1, 1968, H.H. Gopāla Kṛṣṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja arrived there on 30th May. After the kīrtana, he enquired if he could render some service, and was immediately sent to clean Śrīla Prabhupāda's apartment.
"I was fortunate to receive this as my first assignment in devotional service," Mahārāja said. In this way, Gopāla Kṛṣṇa's service attitude for Śrīla Prabhupāda was manifested even before he actually met him.
H.H. Gopāla Kṛṣṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja first met Śrīla Prabhupāda in the evening of June 1st, 1968. Within the first two weeks, he decided that he would accept him as his spiritual master. In his own words: "When I first met Śrīla Prabhupāda, the motivation to surrender to God was already there in me, and within two weeks after meeting him, I knew that Lord Kṛṣṇa wanted me to surrender to Śrīla Prabhupāda."
Around December 1967, Mahārāja had begun visiting many Hindu temples, gurudvārās, and churches every Sunday in his sincere search for the Absolute Truth.
Śrīla Prabhupāda was always sympathetic and extra-merciful to Indians, but of all the Indians who came to hear him, young Gopāla Kṛṣṇa was very special. While all other Indians would offer obeisances and sit for a few minutes, H.H. Gopāla Kṛṣṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja was the only Indian who would come regularly and sit right till the end of the lecture.
During the three months Śrīla Prabhupāda stayed in Montreal, Mahārāja reflected: "My only small qualification was that I was very respectful to Śrīla Prabhupāda from the first day I saw him, and I would stay for his lectures till the end, and leave only after he had left the temple."
Śrīla Prabhupāda started taking great personal interest in him, and both of them started a regular correspondence, with Śrīla Prabhupāda writing as many as three long letters every month. On May 27th, 1969, Śrīla Prabhupāda wrote: "As your name is already Gopāla Kṛṣṇa, there is no need for changing it. You will now be known as Gopāla Kṛṣṇa dāsa." Mahārāja was only 25 years old then.
Later, H.H. Gopāla Kṛṣṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja moved into the temple and engaged himself fully in the service of Śrīla Prabhupāda. For many years, he acted as Śrīla Prabhupāda's personal secretary.
In 1975, Śrīla Prabhupāda sent H.H. Gopāla Kṛṣṇa Gosvāmī to India and made him the Governing Body Commissioner (GBC) of entire India. Śrīla Prabhupāda specifically instructed him to print and expand book distribution in India, and entrusted him with overseeing important projects in Vṛndāvana, Hyderabad, Māyāpura, and Mumbai.
In 1976, Śrīla Prabhupāda appointed him as G.B.C. for Russia. Making several trips to the Soviet Union at great personal risk, he preached and distributed books, and participated in the International Book Fair in Moscow. After the fall of the Communist regime, he helped establish many centers in the erstwhile Soviet Union.
He also served as Chairman and Trustee of the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust, the world's largest publisher and distributor of Vedic literatures.
In 1981, H.H. Gopāla Kṛṣṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja took the Sannyāsa order. A year later, in March 1982, on the auspicious day of Gaura-Pūrṇimā, he became a dīkṣā guru — an initiating spiritual master.
As an empowered representative of Lord Śrī Caitanya, he was engaged tirelessly in distributing Lord Gaurāṅga's mercy, deeply devoted to fulfilling the prophecy that the Lord's name would be chanted in every village and town of the world.
H.H. Gopāla Kṛṣṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja remained GBC for Mumbai, Northern India (Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Vṛndāvana, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, M.P.), Māyāpura, Kenya, Canada, some states of America, and many parts of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
He was instrumental in inspiring, inaugurating, or starting hundreds of temples and centers around the world — including 18 temples in and around Delhi-NCR — playing a leading role in spreading Vedic literature and the message of Bhagavad-gītā through college preaching, corporate preaching, and outreach to institutions like the IITs.
He was also instrumental in building the Annāmṛta Foundation (formerly ISKCON Food for Life), which serves a staggering 12,00,000 full meals every day across India, feeding hungry children. The United Nations World Food Program appreciated this initiative and agreed to provide technical assistance.
Once Śrīla Prabhupāda, appreciating Mahārāja, wrote in a letter: "Whatever is done in India, is being done by Gopāla."
H.H. Gopāla Kṛṣṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja departed from this world on May 5, 2024, in Dehradun. Living a glorious life in service of his beloved spiritual master, he remained an able general till the very end. Despite ill-health and physical challenges, he continued, till his last breath, to serve the mission of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
He was in Dehradun to conduct the Bhumi Pūjān of a new temple and to host Bureau meetings. The longest-serving Chairman of the Bureau, he continued to chair meetings for as long as he could before succumbing to a series of heart attacks. He stands tall as one of the most well-known and respected spiritual leaders of the world. His passing was mourned by devotees, bureaucrats, and politicians alike — a flood of grief and loss for a pure devotee of whose association the world will be bereft.

“Distributing the holy name to conditioned souls, preaching in unfavorable environments and risky places, perfect management of the Society, and demonstrating exemplary devotional service — these continued unchecked till his last breath.”
